Side effects of radiotherapy for prostate cancer?
I am doing research for a friend who plans to have radiation after elective radical prostatectomy. I hope for those who received radiotherapy for prostate cancer to share their expertise on all treatments and what are some side effects.
There are two types of radiation treatment for prostate cancer. I give you then with the side effects these radiation therapy uses 1.External beam X-Powered-rays to kill cancer cells. This type of radiation is effective in killing cancer cells but also scar adjacent healthy tissue. Side Effects – * Urinary problems. Most signs and symptoms include urinary urgency and frequent urination. These problems are usually temporary and gradually decreased in a few weeks after the treatment. The long-term problems are rare. * Loose stools, rectal bleeding, discomfort during bowel movements, a sense of need to defecate (rectal tenesmus). In some cases, these problems persist for months after treatment, but improve on their own in most men. If you have symptoms long term rectal, Medications can help. Rarely, people have persistent bleeding or a rectal ulcer after radiotherapy. Surgery may be necessary to alleviate these problems. * The effects sexual side. Radiation therapy is usually not cause immediate side effects sexual such as erectile dysfunction, but few men who have been treating sexual problems in life. 2. Radioactive seeds implanted in the prostate gained popularity in recent years as a treatment for prostate cancer. The implants, also known as brachytherapy, deliver a higher dose of external beam radiation, but on a considerably longer period. The therapy is generally used in men with smaller or medium-sized prostates with small and lower grade cancers. Secondary Effects – * Urinary problems. The procedure causes signs and urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, painful and slow in most men. You may need medication to treat the signs and symptoms. Some men need medication or the use of intermittent self-catheterization to help them urinate. Urinary symptoms tend to be more severe and longer lasting implants than with external beam radiotherapy. * Sexual problems. Some men suffer from erectile dysfunction due to implants of radioactive seeds. * Rectal symptoms. Sometimes this treatment causes diarrhea, discomfort during bowel movements or other rectal symptoms. However, the symptoms rectal radioactive seed implants are generally less severe than with external radiotherapy .-
