What Prostate cancer is?

Prostate cancer is a malignant (cancerous) tumor (growth) consisting of cells of the prostate. The tumor grows usually slowly and remains confined to the gland for many years. Meanwhile, the tumor produces little or no symptoms or outward signs (Abnormalities on physical examination). The cancer is progressing, however, may extend beyond the surrounding prostate tissue (local spread). In addition, Cancer can also metastasize (spread even more) through other parts of the body such as bones, lungs and liver. Symptoms and signs therefore, are more often associated with advanced prostate cancer.

The mean age at diagnosis of prostate cancer is 70.5 years. Over 80% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men older than 65 years. the autopsy records show that 70% of men aged over 90 have at least one region of its prostate cancer.

* Race: – African-American men are 1.5-2 times more likely than whites to develop prostate cancer. African-American also appear to develop prostate cancer at an earlier age.

* Genetic factors: – Men who have a history of prostate cancer in his family, especially if it was a first year as a parent, brother or sister, are most at risk. This risk can be 2-3 times greater than the risk for men with no family history of disease.

* Diet – A diet rich in fat has been associated an increased risk of prostate cancer.

Symptoms of prostate cancer

More men with prostate cancer have no symptoms. This is particularly true in the early prostate cancer.

* Most cancers of the prostate are discovered incidentally during a digital rectal examination is performed.

* A digital rectal exam is part of a regular review of health overall. Digital refers to a finger.

* When the digital rectal examination, the examiner inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum palpate the prostate for abnormalities.

Symptoms usually occur when the tumor causes some degree of urinary obstruction in the neck of the bladder or urethra.

How prostate cancer diagnosed?

Prostate Cancer is diagnosed from the results of a biopsy of the prostate gland. If the DRE of the prostate or the PSA blood test is abnormal, a prostate cancer suspected. A prostate biopsy is generally recommended below. The biopsy is performed through the anus (rectal trans-) and guided by ultrasound images of the region. A small piece of prostate tissue is removed through a needle for cutting. Biopsy guided by transrectal ultrasound Tru-cut is currently the standard method for diagnosing prostate cancer. In general, a set of 6 cores is taken by sampling the base, apex and mid gland on each side of the gland. More cores can be sampled to increase performance, especially in large glands. A pathologist then examines the tissue under a microscope for signs of cancer in the tissue cells.
