The PSA test – How it works?

The purpose of this paper is to remove some of the mysteries surrounding the PSA test and its use in signaling the possible presence of prostate cancer.

The cells of the prostate gland produce prostate-specific antigen. A rectal exam and a PSA (prostate specific antigen) to help detect prostate cancer in men aged 50 years or more. The Federal Drug Administration approved the use of the PSA test to detect prostate cancer and whether cancer has returned. A high PSA level is a sign that cancer is present. There are other reasons for high levels of PSA and PSA screening has limitations.

The PSA test measures the level of protein produced by the gland prostate. The doctor takes a blood sample and send it to a laboratory. This test is sometimes called a biological marker of cancerous tumors. Men tend to have lower PSA levels in the blood. If the rate is high, one could point to prostate cancer, but we can say that are other conditions present in non-cancerous prostate. With age, the prostate cancer and other prostate problems become a real issue. The enlargement of the prostate and prostatitis may increase levels of PSA in the blood. None of these problems, the causes of cancer, but it is possible a man with one of these problems of developing cancer of the prostate.
The PSA does not tell the doctor if the patient has a mild problem prostate or cancer. The doctor will use the PSA test to decide whether there should be an audit of other signs of prostate cancer.

The Federal Drug Administration approved the PSA test for use with a rectal examination to detect any abnormalities in the prostate. The doctor a gloved finger into the rectum to check for lumps or areas that appear abnormal. The PSA test is used to detect cancer of the rectum among men, especially those without symptoms. The FDA has also approved the test for patients who have had prostate cancer to see if the cancer is back.

The PSA test is strongly recommended for men over 50 years. If the patient has a high risk factor for prostate cancer, your doctor may recommend begin PSA testing at age 45. There are certain risk factors that a man should see if a doctor recommended for routine control. Age factor is the most common risk, but there is a family history of prostate cancer you are more likely to have too. African American with greatest risk of contact with the prostate cancer. Native Americans and Asian men have lower rates of this disease. Some believe this may be due to a diet high in animal fats May increase the likelihood of developing cancer of the prostate.

If a man shows a high level of PSA in blood, the doctor may look for other causes before making a better screening for prostate cancer. If patients have no other symptoms, you may be advised to observe changes in urination habits and take another PSA test in a few months.

prostate cancer and PSA levels?

Hello, my father was diagnosed with a standard PC, PSA 374, controllable, but not curable, has cyprostat tablets injections. He has a swollen neck gland lympg No, but no other symptoms. Docs do not have the bone scan, as they say, treatment will be the same anyway, and why they find things they can not do more! I want to understand more, what does all this it can always be controlled or is it just a matter of time? Does anyone have any experience? What questions should I ask my father to understand? thank you

Hello, I'm no expert, but I worked in a room of urology in the past. During this period I met many patients with prostate cancer, some of them had been sick for years. The hospital where I worked had a research department and prostate patienets many were recruited from clinical trials that are generally well an age limit because they are not recruiting patients, if less than five years off the average life expectancy (I think the court between 75 and 80 do not remember. Some patients also have bone scan which showed the participation of high school. Salaries range from radical prostatectomy for hormonal treatment (which has been used in patients for research) and in most cases, these treatments worked very well. However, I want to give false hopes, 374 is very high and swollen lymph glands means that there is a chance that the cancer has spread. There are a number of support groups where you can get more expert advice and I highly recommend you join one, or at least important on a website. Here are some links that may be useful: http:// www.prostatecancerfoundation.org/ I http://www.labtestsonline.org.uk/understanding/analytes/psa/test.html http://www.prostate-cancer.org.uk/ hope the state of his father continues to be controlled and wish him good luck for the future, Mel.
