A new study demonstrates the effectiveness of vaccines against prostate cancer

In the United States, cancer of the prostate is relatively frequent and more than 200,000 new cases are discovered each year. Asymptomatic metastatic HRPC is known to be resistant to hormonal treatment is used in prostate cancer detected early and no further treatment is effective against it.

A new study has been conducted California, to see if the vaccine against prostate cancer is actually useful. On 1 July 2006, the Journal of Clinical Oncology has published the first results this investigation. Scientists said that the rate of increase of survival four months and half who were given the vaccine against cancer compared to those receiving placebo.

The study was conducted in asymptomatic patients with prostate cancer metastatic hormone refractory (HRPC) and was designed to see if the disease progression is delayed and patients survive longer hours.

The vaccine was well tolerated by patients and adverse events were mild fever and chills.

Eric J. Small, MD, UCSF professor of medicine and urology, with 19 other U.S. institutions conducted the study which was funded by Dendreon Corporation (the developer vaccine), based in Seattle, Washington.

Small said that this trial is very important because it opens the door to other treatments for prostate cancer.

The vaccine, call Sipuleucel-T was created to stimulate T cell immunity to prostatic acid phosphatase.

127 patients were included in the study. Every two weeks is expected to have three transfusions Sipuleucel-T or placebo. The findings were that 115 patients in this group had progressive disease at the time of data analysis and all patients were followed for survival for 3 years.

For Sipuleucel-T-treated median survival was 25.9 months. For those who received placebo treatment, overall survival was 21.4 months.

Small said: "We found that the time to disease progression Sipuleucel-T was 11.7 weeks against 10.0 weeks for placebo, indicating that there are difficulties in the use of disease progression as a marker with a median survival of those affected treated with immunotherapy.

The conclusions were that Sipuleucel-T provides a survival advantage for patients with asymptomatic hormone prostate cancer refractory metastatic (HRPC). These are the results of a Phase III.

Study Phase I and II have also been taken by Eric J. small to be conducted at UCSF and everyone is eager to hear the findings.
