Many Asian men show a greater ability to survive prostate cancer

Next to skin cancer, cancer the prostate is the most common type of cancer among American men and it is estimated that nearly 219,000 men in the United States alone will be diagnosed with cancer prostate cancer in 2007 and just over 27,000 men will die of the disease.

However, as with many diseases, the survival rate for prostate cancer are not the same in the world and this should provide us with data that allow us to improve our methods of treatment.

In a study recent data have been collected almost 117,000 men with prostate cancer (about 108,000 white males and nearly 9,000 Asians from the six largest ethnic groups in Asia – Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, South Asian and Vietnamese). The study analyzed both survival and prognostic factors among these men.

Among the various conclusions The study found that the risk profile for men in Asia was worse than that of white men with Asian men are more likely to have advanced cases of disease at diagnosis and treatment with a variety healing therapies. However, the study also showed that survival rates among Asian men were equal or better than white men.

These results were particularly surprising given that the age at which men are diagnosed Asians with prostate cancer is much greater than that of white men, and cancers are usually more advanced, which clearly indicates a reduced survival rate.

When the data were studied in more detail, however, it was found that there was a remarkable variation between different groups of Asian men. For example, Japanese men are one third less likely to die from cancer of the prostate, while men in South Asia (including Nepal, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bhutan) were forty percent more likely to die from the disease.

So What does this mean? Well, unfortunately, the answer seems to be much. These variations are certainly large enough to be significant, but wide variation between the various groups largely similar, it is impossible to draw concrete conclusions. Without doubt, there are a variety of things such as diet, exercise and genetics are a factor, but several results seem almost contradictory.

The result is that study would be expected to identify differences between ethnic groups we can improve the treatment of prostate cancer, in fact, raises more questions it solves. In fact, others emphasize the dangers of reaching conclusions based on a set too wide, as shown by the wide variation in the figures for men of Asia in general and men in South Asia, the study showed that differences were more higher than many had thought and therefore proposed that these changes may in fact be larger than previously thought.

At the end of the day This study has led us further forward, but stressed the need for more research, we hope to obtain better data and we can enjoy the best survival rates in many Asian groups in the formulation of treatment plans for prostate cancer.
