Selling drugs

If the sale of "illegal substances" is a crime, what about drug trafficking legal? Manufacturers of pharmaceuticals, what it is. In 1997, pharmaceutical companies aggressively Hawking turns to their products directly to consumers, after generations of leave needed medicines and your choice for medical professionals.

Television commercials and newspaper advertisements inviting the public to inform physicians who want their prescription drugs that are pushed. Buy Nexium, the "purple pill," they say. Fix acidity. Only now known as acid reflux disease, with all potential hazards involving the new name for the disease of bad luck. Or a pill that can help "bipolar disorder", "plate artery mortal", or perhaps a syndrome "new".

Watch TV in the evening, it is easy to see ten or twenty ads hustling drugs. All this aggressive marketing of drugs is perfectly legal. You can go to jail for "Smoking herb", but it is well that the drugs their children to behave well and, hopefully, learn, or if you take drugs to deal with problems such as ED, prostate, arterial plaque, arthritis, menopause and infinity.

Note, however, tell us, buzzing around endlessly about the potential side effects of their products. gas for the headaches to fainting possible liver and kidney, and the warning – a veritable litany of risks to take medication.

And what has all this? One outside the culture of drug control, with mixed messages coming at us from all directions, confused and shifting our focus, that is. No "do drugs", unless of course you happen to be the drug of choice drug companies are pressing.

The reason, of course, is obvious: it is about increasing sales. And it works.

From 1996 to 2005, the amount of money spent on advertising by pharmaceutical companies increased by 11.4 billion dollars to 29.9 million. (The New England Journal of Medicine, August 16, 2007). A study conducted by Elizabeth Ann Almasi (Stanford University), "The Relationship between Direct-to-Consumer Prescription Drug Advertising and prescribing rates "Includes the following information:

"… The requirements of the fifty most heavily advertised drugs rose to a rate six times higher (24.6%) than other drugs (4.3%) between 1999 and 2000. "

"In addition to recipes, CTD (advertising directly to consumers) also increased the demand for other forms of treatment. 14% of patients showed health problems in because of the publicity. "

"A study conducted by Murray (2004) found that 24% of all persons scheduled a visit to your physician specifically to talk about advertising for prescription drugs. "

"Unfortunately, He also gave doctors 12% of advertisements for medicines has generated requests for an order in which not think therapy would be useful. "

"Patients who recalled seeing a DTC ad, 94% recall on television, newspaper endorsements and 62% of advertisements in magazines, and 22% recall of radio points (Kaiser Health Survey, 2005) "

"Spending on DTC is highly concentrated on products that generally the treatment of chronic diseases and have a low incidence of side effects (Rosenthal et al, 2002). "

Z Magazine noted, "a study of family physicians and 71 percent felt DTC (Direct to Consumer) ads physicians pressure in the prescription of drugs not normally prescribed. And, according to a study by K. Henry Kaiser Foundation, where patients require medication Specifically, doctors prescribe that 44 percent of the time. " Z "also concluded that" the ads are often useless or drugs "Lifestyle" that fuel the belief that there is a pill for every ill. Medicines for thinning hair, nail fungus and other issues are very important to promote low-cost treatments such as water pills for blood pressure are ignored. "

Publicity Department of the University of Texas at Austin, says: "… the First Amendment imposes limits on government repression speech. Advertising is recognized by the courts as a form of commercial speech. Commercial speech has been defined by the Court as the floor, they offer a simple commercial transaction. "Although the courts have never recognized as being as valid as other forms of expression, freedom commercial speech is protected by the First Amendment. "

While doing something? If the government ban all advertising Direct to consumer (DTC) drug? Unfortunately, this is not possible – because advertising is also considered freedom of expression, and we can not deprive pharmaceutical companies of their right to speak, is for advertising.

If DTC advertising can not be prohibited, what can you do? Power cons HYPE FDA drug companies "educate the public about the fact that most of what is our way beams is not designed to educate, in order to scare potential customers? I do not know, but my feeling is, do not expect.

Nothing sold as fear and marketing drugs directly to consumers is based on fear.
