Elevated levels of PSA does not necessarily mean cancer of the prostate. – Especially in the elderly. Increased PSA levels normally with age. Due to this, several major medical journals have recently published articles do not recommend testing of PSA in men aged 75 years. Surgery is rarely recommended in this age group because of the risks of any surgical procedure requiring anesthesia. Prostate cancers grow very slowly. At the age of his father – who has a much greater chance of dying from other causes, including complications of surgery that would actually die of prostate cancer. I know that treating health problems of elderly parents is difficult – mine are the same age as his father. It seems that your doctor complies with the guidelines and doing what is best to give his father better quality of life by treating this conservatively. Best wishes! Also – a PSA of 14 years is not very high – indicating if cancer is probably in the early stages.
