Ultrasound to find a place in the kidney – Cancer?

I know this is not the best place to ask medical questions but I am in a loss to know where else to do. My father had an ultrasound for the game back pain and upper abdomen. While research its apparent broken ribs, a place was found in his kidney. The doctor is now trying to get a scanner. What can you do a little "on the kidney "means? Could be a kidney stone or something more serious? He has not had problems with urination or problems prostate. It is difficult not to know … You know?
